The success of this policy in the goods market has been well documented in many past studies. However, studies on its impact all the labour market have been few and far between. In fact,\u00a0 there has been no such study ever conducted in Malaysia and this paper attempts to fill the current gap in the literature on the impact of privatisation on the Malaysian labour market. In this paper it is shown that, based on a modified model of<br \/>\nHaskel-Szymanski (1993), privatisation tends to reduce the demand for labour. An empirical test conducted using data related to the privatisation of the Telecommunication Department, Malaysia appears to support the<br \/>\nprediction of the model. The reduction in The demand for labour is attributable to the change in firm&#8217;s objective from social welfare to profit maximisation.
