This study thus provides a comprehensive review of the literature on rural entrepreneurs’ business survival, identifying key influencing factors, research gaps and future research directions. Using the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature review was conducted on 55 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2020 and 2024 in the Web of Science, EBSCO and Scopus databases. The findings indicate that most studies have concentrated on developing countries and depended on singular theoretical frameworks, with some neglecting theory altogether. As such, there is a noticeable lack of consistent theoretical grounding in the literature. Although the concepts of human capital, financial literacy and social networks have received attention in relation to rural entrepreneurs’ survival, newer themes such as psychological capital, digitalisation and sustainability are beginning to gain ground. By synthesising these insights, this study not only offers a more coherent conceptual structure of rural entrepreneurs’ business survival but also sets the stage for future research to adopt multi-theory and cross-country approaches. It also provides practical insights that support policymakers and practitioners in developing targeted strategies to ensure the survival of rural entrepreneurship.

Insight into the Relationship between Entrepreneurship Orientations and Performance: The Case of SME Exporters in Malaysia /jurnalpengurusan/article/insight-into-the-relationship-between-entrepreneurship-orientations-and-performance-the-case-of-sme-exporters-in-malaysia/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=insight-into-the-relationship-between-entrepreneurship-orientations-and-performance-the-case-of-sme-exporters-in-malaysia Tue, 11 Oct 2022 06:01:41 +0000 /jurnalpengurusan/?post_type=article&p=5334 The rise in the number of small and medium businesses competing in foreign markets has led to growing interest among researchers in the study of the international activities of these firms. Previous studies have focused on how small businesses successfully compete in the market alongside larger and resourceful firms despite the former’s scarcity of resources. In this light, we develop the conceptual framework that is based upon the resource-based view, and explore the link between firm-specific resources and export performance. This study examines the relationships between entrepreneurial dimensions, namely pro-activeness, risk-taking, and innovativeness, and the performance of the exporter. Based on a sample of 220 SMEs, this study found that pro-activeness affects export performance positively and significantly. In addition, innovativeness was found to be significantly associated with export performance. Finally, the paper ends with the conclusion, a presentation of the limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research.

In an industry dominated by Chinese businessmen, it is interesting to explore the factors affecting the performance of the minority players. This study thus focuses on Bumiputera housing developers in Malaysia. Using the mixed method approach, findings are based on the responses from 38 returned questionnaires and 18 interviews with industry players. Our analysis revealed that the performance of Bumiputera housing developers was influenced by the courses they had attended before starting their business, their propensity to take risks, geographical location-concentration strategy, and their close relationship with bankers and officers of local authorities. This study has significant ramifications for indigenous housing entrepreneurship in Malaysia.

Social Networks and Entrepreneurships – Does Personal Networks Matters? /jurnalpengurusan/article/social-networks-and-entrepreneurships-does-personal-networks-matters/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=social-networks-and-entrepreneurships-does-personal-networks-matters Fri, 07 Oct 2022 01:47:17 +0000 /jurnalpengurusan/?post_type=article&p=1673 Institutional and social network are several major research traditions in the business and management areas. This paper examines the role of owner/managers’ social network on entrepreneurship initiatives and the underlying socio-cultural factors promoting or impeding SME development in Kazakhstan. A semi-structured interviews were carried-out with thirteen SME owners/managers in Almaty Kazakhstan. It is found that personal networks in general social networks have significant implications on a variety of entrepreneurial activities. SMEs still need to utilize their personal social networks to substitute for formal institutions. Normative institutional elements such as legal and moral are still major factors driving entrepreneurial activities but still lagging behind regulative and cognitive institutional transformation. Business ties and networking ability may mitigate the necessity for external financing. One of the major implication in this study is the need for SME owners/managers to build personal networks and to keep and maintain this network with their peers as well as the government not only for extra information but even for the sustainability of their business. To do this, SME owners/managers need to be regularly in contact with their peers and government officials, offering helps when needed, collaborate on projects, share their goals, get connected on social media and also joining networking events.
