Previous studies have focused on how small businesses successfully compete in the market alongside larger and resourceful firms despite the former’s scarcity of resources. In this light, we develop the conceptual framework that is based upon the resource-based view, and explore the link between firm-specific resources and export performance. This study examines the relationships between entrepreneurial dimensions, namely pro-activeness, risk-taking, and innovativeness, and the performance of the exporter. Based on a sample of 220 SMEs, this study found that pro-activeness affects export performance positively and significantly. In addition, innovativeness was found to be significantly associated with export performance. Finally, the paper ends with the conclusion, a presentation of the limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research.

Orientasi Pasaran Eksport dan Prestasi Eksport: Satu Kajian Empirikal ke atas Firma Perabot di Malaysia /jurnalpengurusan/article/orientasi-pasaran-eksport-dan-prestasi-eksport-satu-kajian-empirikal-ke-atas-firma-perabot-di-malaysia/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=orientasi-pasaran-eksport-dan-prestasi-eksport-satu-kajian-empirikal-ke-atas-firma-perabot-di-malaysia Mon, 10 Oct 2022 01:23:27 +0000 /jurnalpengurusan/?post_type=article&p=4783 One area of strategic interest in international marketing research relates to the concept of export marketing orientation. Although there has been substantial literature in the area, very few scholars have attempted to examine the relationship between export market orientation and export performance, especially in the context of countries in a developing economy. This study aims to bridge the gap in our understanding of export marketing success by conducting an empirical study within the context of Malaysian furniture industry. Specifically, this study attempts to uncover the relationship between three main dimensions of export market orientation, namely export market intelligence generation, export market intelligence dissemination and responsiveness to export markets, with export performance. A quantitative research method via questionnaire survey was distributed to directors and managers, and a sample of 213 local firms that export furniture to international markets was collected. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to examine the research hypotheses. The findings reveal that export performance is positively influenced by export market intelligence generation, export market intelligence dissemination and responsiveness to export markets. The results of this study could help managers and policy makers within the respective industry, particularly in the effort to constructing effective and suitable strategies to improve performance of firms in the international arena.

SMEs’ Export Performance: The Effect of Learning Orientation and Innovativeness /jurnalpengurusan/article/smes-export-performance-the-effect-of-learning-orientation-and-innovativeness/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=smes-export-performance-the-effect-of-learning-orientation-and-innovativeness Sat, 08 Oct 2022 05:39:59 +0000 /jurnalpengurusan/?post_type=article&p=1823 This study investigates the role of innovativeness and learning orientation on the internationalisation performance of small and medium entrepreneurial firms. Exporting has been the most appropriate mode of expansion into foreign market for SMEs due to lower risk and less resource commitment. The literature insists that future study should pay more attention on how SMEs improve export performance. Review of literature brings to the conclusion that innovativeness and learning orientation are pertinent in building the success of SMEs in export markets. Notwithstanding the existing investigation on the impact of innovativeness on performance, the results are inconclusive, reinforcing the need for investigation in the context of emerging market and SMEs. In addition, learning orientation composed of three dimensions namely managerial commitment, system perspective and openness and experimentation. Previous studies view learning orientation as summate of all three dimensions. Unlike previous studies, this study investigates the effect of each dimension on innovativeness. A conceptual framework was developed based on the resource-based view. Data were collected from small and medium business exporters in the manufacturing sector of an emerging market. A total of 220 respondents participated in this study. Data were analysed using structural equation modeling to test the hypotheses, and the results show that innovativeness is positively related to export performance. In addition, the findings reveal that managerial commitment is a function of innovativeness. System perspective, and openness and experimentation have no significant effect on innovativeness. Implications and limitations are also discussed in this study.
