The strength of an individual’s identification is context-dependent and can influence an individual’s behavior according to certain expectations. Despite abundant research on board oversight roles, little is known about why board members behave in certain ways due to a lack of literature from a socio-behavioral perspective. This paper explores how identification with social groups and role identities among the government board of directors (GBOD) influence their human capital and board roles. The results, derived from semi-structured interviews of twelve government officials who were appointed to the boards of Malaysian State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) as government representatives, indicate that different identifications, such as the role of government board of director, corporate director, or both, and identification with the SOE could lead to different perceptions of the importance of human capital and influence their contributions in boardrooms. This study provides empirical evidence for the corporate governance literature from a socio-behavioral perspective and helps government agencies and regulators understand the reasons behind GBOD behavior. Selecting board members based on their human capital may be inadequate, and board members may need training to help them identify their roles and responsibilities as government representatives on the board.

Knowledge Management Strategy and Human Capital Management in Hotel Industry /jurnalpengurusan/article/knowledge-management-strategy-and-human-capital-management-in-hotel-industry/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=knowledge-management-strategy-and-human-capital-management-in-hotel-industry Tue, 11 Oct 2022 01:40:13 +0000 /jurnalpengurusan/?post_type=article&p=5220 The present study explores the knowledge management strategy of Malaysian hotels in managing and leveraging their human capital. This study employs a case study approach, where interviews were conducted with human resource managers of seven hotels with different star ratings. Data are analyzed using NVivo and within and cross case analyses are performed to understand the different knowledge management strategies of Malaysian hotels to determine best practices in harnessing human capital in the hotel industry. The findings suggest that firms’ strategies are influenced by knowledge management and human capital management. The higher the rating of the hotels, the more likely the hotel is to adopt a knowledge management strategy based upon a human oriented strategy. This influences the innovativeness and creativeness of their human capital, which, in turn, increases the competitive advantage of the firms.

The independent variables in the current study are the Human Capital Efficiency (HCE), Structural Capital Efficiency (SCE), and Capital Employed Efficiency (CEE), and Audit Opinion used as a control variable. This study is a descriptive quantitative research using multiple linear regression analysis. The population of this study is the sharia insurance firms in Southeast Asia and Middle East countries with a total of 155 observations. This study shows that, two out of three variables are significant. Structural Capital Efficiency has a positive and significant effect, Capital Employed Efficiency has a negative and significant impact, and the Human Capital Efficiency has no significant effect on takaful financial performance. This study can be used as a reference, evaluation, and source of improvement for sharia insurance firms in optimizing the Islamic intellectual capital to improve the firm’s financial performance. To achieve this objective, companies could improve employees’ knowledge on sharia regulations, especially regarding sharia insurance, training, fulfilling employee’s rights, improving system quality, services, and transaction procedures.

Investor Sentiment, Human Capital and Fama French Factors: Measurement and Performance in the Malaysian Market /jurnalpengurusan/article/investor-sentiment-human-capital-and-fama-french-factors-measurement-and-performance-in-the-malaysian-market/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=investor-sentiment-human-capital-and-fama-french-factors-measurement-and-performance-in-the-malaysian-market Sat, 08 Oct 2022 16:33:58 +0000 /jurnalpengurusan/?post_type=article&p=3131 This paper examines pricing implications of investors’ behavioral biasness in the Malaysian equity market. By using monthly data from January 2000, through January 2014, we explore the impact of investor sentiment, human capital, and Fama-French risk factors in multiple factor asset pricing models. A unique seven-variable composite index is used for the measurement of investor sentiment. Results indicate that sentiment is a priced risk, and display the ability to capture returns unexplained by SMB (Small minus Big) and HML (High minus Low) factors. Evidence suggests that sentiment is a source of systemic risk, and effectively explains returns of stocks with opaque characteristics. Modeling aggregate labor income produces insignificant results, suggesting that there are no returns for human capital in the Malaysian equity market. The Fama and French three factor model together with investor sentiment risk achieves a substantial pricing efficiency.

The Moderating Effects of Independent Directors’ Human Capital on the Relationship between Related Party Transactions and Firm Performance: Evidence from Malaysia /jurnalpengurusan/article/the-moderating-effects-of-independent-directors-human-capital-on-the-relationship-between-related-party-transactions-and-firm-performance-evidence-from-malaysia/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-moderating-effects-of-independent-directors-human-capital-on-the-relationship-between-related-party-transactions-and-firm-performance-evidence-from-malaysia Sat, 08 Oct 2022 11:44:14 +0000 /jurnalpengurusan/?post_type=article&p=2568 The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of related party transactions (RPTs) on firm performance and whether this effect is moderated by independent directors’ (INEDs) presence and their human capital (i.e. functional and firmspecific knowledge). Based on a sample of 300 non-financial firms listed on Bursa Malaysia for 2013, this study found that RPTs in general, have a positive effect on firm performance and this effect varies according to the parties involved in RPTs. Specifically, this study found that firm performance is higher for RPTs involving subsidiaries, associates and joint ventures. The findings support the efficient transactions hypothesis that RPTs can create value to the firm. INEDs’ presence and INEDs’ functional and firm-specific knowledge are found not to have any moderating effects on the RPTsfirm performance relationship. Therefore, the agency, resource dependence and human capital theories that stress on the importance of INEDs as corporate monitor and advisor are not supported. This study, perhaps the first, explains the interaction effects of INEDs’ functional and firm-specific knowledge on RPTs-firm performance relationship.
