The development of the information technology (IT) implementation readiness model for SMEs is required to investigate the status of usage of IT among SMEs in Malaysia towards the industrial revolution 4.0. It also investigates the obstacles in the implementation of IT in SMEs. Literature and empirical studies have identified ten critical success factors for IT implementation in SMEs namely the management, staff, IT planning, outsourcing/financial, consultants, vendors, organizational culture, relationship management and change, IT champion, and perception and attitude. The IT Implementation Readiness Model (or mRIME) consists of three components: success factors, evaluation method and readiness level index. Two case studies have been conducted involving industry to validate the proposed model and the evaluation results show that the model is appropriate, practical and accurate. The mRIME model could be used to assist SMEs by having a clear method to measure the level of readiness in implementing IT as well as to provide justification for the future funding, and to ensure the SMEs are prepared and not being left behind in the new business era the Industrial Revolution 4.0.
