As employees increasingly manage the complexities of remote working, the distinctions between responsibilities in both work and family have become increasingly indefinite. This new working norm has introduced unique challenges in balancing work-family demands, leading to greater emotional exhaustion. Employing the Demand-Induces Strain Compensation-Recovery (DISC) Model, data from 335 teachers were analysed to examine how the psychological detachment impact the association of work and family demands with emotional exhaustion during WFH. Findings affirm a direct relationship with respect to emotional exhaustion and the emotional demands arising from work and family conflicts (WFC and FWC). Additionally, the findings suggest that psychological detachment alleviates the detrimental impacts of emotional demands and FWC in relation to exhaustion levels. However, a similar impact was not observed in the association linking work-to-family conflict (WFC) to emotional exhaustion. This study underscores the importance of cultivating psychological detachment as a critical organisational approach to reduce emotional exhaustion in the context of WFH, thereby enhancing employee well-being and productivity.

Kualiti Hubungan Penyelia-Pekerja dengan Konflik Kerja-Keluarga: Peranan Tanggapan Sokongan Penyelia sebagai Pengantara /jurnalpengurusan/article/kualiti-hubungan-penyelia-pekerja-dengan-konflik-kerja-keluarga-peranan-tanggapan-sokongan-penyelia-sebagai-pengantara/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=kualiti-hubungan-penyelia-pekerja-dengan-konflik-kerja-keluarga-peranan-tanggapan-sokongan-penyelia-sebagai-pengantara Sat, 08 Oct 2022 17:25:07 +0000 /jurnalpengurusan/?post_type=article&p=3248 The objective of this study was to investigate the role of perceived supervisor support as a mediator between leader- member exchange (LMX) and work-family conflict. Although previous studies have found significant relationship between LMX and work-family conflict, empirical evidence explaining the relationship is still limited. Thus, this study attempts to fill the gap by examining the role of perceived supervisor support as a mediator between LMX and work-family conflict. A study was conducted on a sample consisting of 535 nurses in 6 public hospitals in Selangor. Hypotheses were tested using hierarchical regression analysis. The results showed: (1) LMX was negatively related to work-family conflict; (2) LMX was positively related to perceived supervisor support; (3) perceived supervisor support was negativly related to work-family conflict and; (4) perceived supervisor support mediates the relationship between LMX and work-family conflict. The findings demonstrate the role of perceived supervisor support as a mediator in the relationship between LMX and work-family conflict. The study also highlighted the importance of maintaining good supervisor-employee relationships. Good relations between supervisors and employees will enhance the perceived social support which in turn reduces work-family conflict.

However, studies on inability to cope with conflicting demands on work, family and distance learning among the distance learners in Malaysia have received little attention. In this article, a sample of distance learners (N=173) were utilized to examine the relationship between work-family conflict towards problem-focused coping, job satisfaction and emotional well-being, and to examine the mediating effect of problem-focused coping between work-life conflict towards job satisfaction and emotional well-being. The research model was tested upon Coping Theory and Self-Determination Theory. Results of Partial Least Square (PLS) demonstrated that work-family conflict has a positive influence only on problem-focused coping, and subsequently problem-focused coping was found to mediate the relationship between work-life conflicts towards job satisfaction and emotional well-being. Based on the findings, this research suggests the employers to enhance work-life balance policies and programmes especially for employed distance learners, and the management of distance education to improve student retention and completion rates by providing supports to the distance learners.
