Speakers: Prof. Ulung Datuk Dr. Shamsul Amri Baharuddin (KITA-ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp), Prof. Madya Dr. Kartini Aboo Talib @ Khalid (KITA-ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp) & Prof. Dr. Sivamurugan Pandian (USM)

Moderated by KITA Research Fellow Ruhan Shahrir Abdul Halim, the forum focused on how the portrayal and interpretation of Malaysia’s current political landscape and situations in popular discourse such as via social and mass media, differed than that of academic discourse. KITA Founding Director Distinguished Prof. Datuk Dr. Shamsul Amri Baharuddin approached on the issue epistemologically by differentiating between social concepts that are often confused by many, including ‘oppositionism’ and ‘opposition’ party. Meanwhile, by using US politic and governance as reference, KITA Deputy Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kartini Aboo Talib @ Khalid raised the issue of ‘deep state’ in Malaysian context. Finally, Prof. Dr. Sivamurugan Pandian from University Science of Malaysia (USM) presented eleven indicators in analysing Malaysian politics which he based on Allan Lichtman, the only US scholar who correctly predicted Donald Trump’s win in 2016 election.

Parts of the discussion in the discourse were picked up and published on an online news portal, The Malaysian Insight:
