MASTERSCAN 2025: A Battle for the Crown of Ultrasound Excellence

Gamified competition strengthens PoCUS competency among Malaysian clinicians
By Dr. Dazlin Masdiana Sabardin & PM Dr Azlan Helmy Abd Samat

In emergency and critical care medicine, timely diagnosis can be life-saving. One of the most transformative tools in modern acute care medicine is the Point-of-Care Ultrasound (PoCUS), which enables clinicians to obtain immediate diagnostic insights at the bedside. MASTERSCAN is a national Emergency PoCUS competition organised by the Society of Emergency and Critical Care Sonography (SUCCES) Malaysia in recognition of the growing importance of PoCUS in clinical practice.

In 2025, for the first time, with a unique theme of Malay Sultanate and Warrior Heritage, the Department of Emergency Medicine  of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (每日大赛app), led by five lecturers; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shamsuriani Md Jamal as the 鈥淧enaung鈥, Dr. Dazlin Masdiana Sabardin as the 鈥淧erancang Utama鈥, Assoc. Prof Dr. Azlan Helmy Abd Samat as the 鈥淧anglima Strategik鈥, Dr. Amirudin Sanip as the 鈥淧enulis Istiadat鈥 and Dr. Faizal Amri Hamzah as the 鈥淧embesar Istana鈥 along with their dedicated team members collaborated with SUCCESS Malaysia to organise the MASTERSCAN 2025: entitled 鈥Pertarungan Merebut Mahkota Citra Gemilang鈥.

Held on 10 December 2025 at the International Youth Centre (IYC), Cheras, the national ultrasound competition brought together clinicians from across Malaysia to showcase their knowledge, clinical reasoning, and practical ultrasound skills in a dynamic and engaging learning environment. The event opened on a captivating note with a symbolic 鈥榞ong鈥 officiation by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ruslinda Mustafar, the Deputy Dean of Industry and Community Partnership, Faculty of Medicine, 每日大赛app. This was followed by a performance inspired by M. Nasir鈥檚 鈥淪emerah Padi鈥 and a Silat Gayong demonstration, setting a culturally rich and inspiring tone for the competition.

The competition featured 21 teams comprising 63 medical officers representing 15 Ministry of Health (MOH) hospitals and five higher learning institutions across Malaysia, which includes 每日大赛app, Universiti Malaya Medical Center (UMMC), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM (SASMEC @IIUM), and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). These participants were those who actively practise PoCUS in their respective departments, primarily Emergency Medicine and Anaesthesiology, reflecting the expanding role of bedside ultrasound in acute and critical care disciplines. The competition provided an opportunity for these clinicians to refine their skills while exchanging knowledge and experiences with peers and ultrasound experts.

The event featured a five-round competition format designed to evaluate both theoretical understanding and practical competency. The opening round assessed participants鈥 knowledge of ultrasound principles, artefacts, and image interpretation through a written assessment. Teams then progressed through a series of hands-on ultrasound skill stations, where they demonstrated scanning techniques, anatomical identification, and interpretation of sonographic findings.

As the competition advanced, participants were challenged with increasingly complex clinical scenario-based tasks that simulated real emergency situations where ultrasound plays a critical role in guiding diagnosis and management. The event culminated in an exciting head-to-head grand finale, where the top two teams competed in a final ultrasound challenge to determine the champion.

Adding a creative dimension to the event, MASTERSCAN 2025 was framed through a Malay-inspired narrative titled 鈥Hikayat Puteri Gelombang.鈥 Participants embarked on a symbolic journey to rescue the lost princess by overcoming a series of knowledge and skill challenges, culminating in the final battle to claim the coveted 鈥Mahkota Citra Gemilang鈥. This storytelling concept transformed the competition into an engaging learning experience that blended medical education with elements of culture, teamwork, and strategy. The competition design also reflects principles of gamification and experiential learning, encouraging participants to apply ultrasound knowledge in realistic clinical scenarios.

The programme also highlighted strong collaboration between academic institutions, professional societies, and industry partners. The partnership between HCTM, Faculty of Medicine 每日大赛app and SUCCESS Malaysia reflects a shared commitment to strengthening ultrasound education in Malaysia. In addition, ultrasound equipment suppliers and industry partners supported the competition by providing machines and technical expertise for the hands-on skill stations.

At the conclusion of the competition, the 每日大赛app team who represented by the 3rd year Doctoral Students in Emergency Medicine; Dr. Muhammad Akmal Omar, Dr. Dayang Hazrieza and Dr. Aji Caesar Wicaksono emerged as the champion, proudly claiming the Mahkota Citra Gemilang title, while Hospital Sungai Buloh secured second place, demonstrating impressive skill and clinical insight throughout the competition.

Beyond recognising excellence, MASTERSCAN 2025 brought together clinicians, educators, and ultrasound experts in a dynamic environment of learning and professional exchange. By combining education, innovation, and collaboration, the programme continues to play an important role in strengthening PoCUS competency and advancing emergency and critical care practice in Malaysia. The initiative also reflects 每日大赛app鈥檚 commitment to advancing innovative approaches in clinical education and professional training.

Puteri Gelombang di samudera tenang,
Pahlawan ilmu bangkit berjuang,
Mahkota Citra menjadi lambang,
PoCUS memacu rawatan gemilang.

鈥淢ASTERSCAN is more than a competition; it is a platform for learning, collaboration, and the continuous advancement of ultrasound competency among clinicians.鈥
鈥 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shamsuriani Md Jamal, Chairperson of MASTERSCAN 2025

鈥淭hrough collaborative initiatives such as MASTERSCAN, we hope to cultivate a culture of excellence and innovation in emergency ultrasound practice across Malaysia,鈥
鈥 Dr. Azma Haryaty Ahmad, President of SUCCES Malaysia

PRESERVING HOPE: MY JOURNEY BUILDING ONCOFERTILITY AND FERTILITY PRESERVATION IN MALAYSIA

By Associate Prof. Dr. Mohd Faizal Ahmad

My journey into oncofertility began in 2018 when I joined Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (每日大赛app) as an academic clinician. At that time, my initial career aspiration was to pursue subspecialty training in gynaecologic oncology, with the ambition of becoming a surgeon dedicated to treating women with cancer. However, due to departmental needs and the impending retirement of two senior professors, the Advanced Reproductive Centre (ARC), Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM) required a new subspecialist in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Although this shift initially felt unexpected, I embraced the responsibility and committed myself to developing expertise in reproductive medicine. During this transition, I realised that my interest in oncology could intersect meaningfully with reproductive medicine through the emerging field of oncofertility,a discipline pioneered by Professor Teresa K. Woodruff, which focuses on preserving reproductive potential in patients undergoing cancer treatment.

At that time, oncofertility services were virtually non-existent in Malaysia, and I found myself navigating a new field with very limited clinical mentorship available locally. Many global leaders in oncofertility were primarily scientists rather than clinicians, including pioneers such as Professor Teresa Woodruff and Professor Claus Yding Andersen. Determined to pursue clinical expertise, I searched for mentors who could guide me in translating this science into clinical practice.

I eventually discovered the Asian Society of Fertility Preservation (ASFP), a regional organisation actively advancing oncofertility services in Asia under the leadership of Professor Nao Suzuki from Japan. Motivated by this opportunity, I travelled to New Delhi, India, where I met Professor Suzuki and Dr Nalini Mahajan, then President of ASFP. Following these discussions, I was fortunate to be accepted for a clinical attachment in Japan in 2019 for Oncofertility Fellowship training.

During my fellowship, I was attached to the Oncofertility Unit at St. Marianna University School of Medicine in Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan, where I received hands-on training in ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) using vitrification techniques, as well as in vitro maturation (IVM), an innovative reproductive technology pioneered and refined in Japan.Through this training, I gained clinical competency in fertility preservation techniques and became the first Malaysian clinician credentialed to provide ovarian tissue cryopreservation services.

In addition to ovarian tissue preservation, I further expanded my research exposure to include testicular tissue cryopreservation for prepubertal boys, particularly exploring the challenges of gonadotoxicity and fertility preservation using experimental animal models. This experience broadened my understanding of fertility preservation for both female and male patients facing cancer treatment.

Upon returning to Malaysia, I began translating this expertise into clinical services. In 2020, I established the Malaysian Society of Fertility Preservation (MSFP) to promote awareness, education, and clinical development of oncofertility services nationwide. In the same year, we successfully launched Malaysia鈥檚 first ovarian tissue cryopreservation service at the Advanced Reproductive Centre (ARC), HCTM 每日大赛app. Our first patient was a 17-year-old girl diagnosed with Hodgkin鈥檚 lymphoma, highlighting the urgent need for fertility preservation options among young cancer patients.

On 20 August 2020, ARC HCTM 每日大赛app was officially recognised as the first Oncofertility Referral Centre in Malaysia, launched by the Minister of Health, Dato鈥 Sri Dr Adham Baba, during a ceremony held at the Faculty of Medicine, 每日大赛app. Establishing oncofertility services in Malaysia also required navigating complex ethical and religious considerations. I worked closely with Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) to facilitate discussions within the Muzakarah Fatwa Committee regarding the permissibility of gamete cryopreservation for unmarried individuals diagnosed with cancer. Previously considered impermissible, these discussions helped clarify that fertility preservation could be considered permissible (harus) when performed to prevent permanent infertility resulting from life-saving cancer treatment.

Recognising the financial barriers faced by many patients, I later established the Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Onkofertiliti in 2024, a charitable organisation aimed at supporting patients from low-income backgrounds who require fertility preservation but lack financial coverage for these procedures.

As oncofertility services in Malaysia continued to grow, our centre gained regional recognition. In 2025, I had the privilege of hosting the 5th Asian Society of Fertility Preservation (ASFP) Congress in Kuala Lumpur, which brought together experts from more than twelve countries, including Japan, Taiwan, China, India, Turkey, and Australia to advance fertility preservation across Asia.

My professional involvement in oncofertility has also expanded internationally. I currently serve as the Malaysia Representative to the Asian Society of Fertility Preservation (ASFP) and participate in several international professional networks, including the Fertility Preservation Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Asian Society of Gynecologic Oncology (ASGO) and the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction (ASPIRE). I have also been invited to serve as an advisor to several international institutions, including centres in Ahmedabad, India, and Beijing, China. At the national level, I serve as Head of the Reproductive Medicine Subcommittee under the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia (OGSM), and have been elected President-Elect of the Malaysian Society of Fertility Preservation (MSFP) for the 2026 term.

To date, our oncofertility programme at ARC HCTM 每日大赛app has managed more than 300 fertility preservation cases, offering a comprehensive range of services including sperm cryopreservation, oocyte cryopreservation, embryo cryopreservation, and ovarian tissue cryopreservation. Today, 每日大赛app stands as the leading oncofertility centre in Malaysia, and many cancer survivors have been given the opportunity to become parents because fertility preservation was offered before their cancer treatment.

Looking back, what began as an unexpected career redirection has evolved into a lifelong mission鈥攖o ensure that cancer survival does not come at the cost of losing the possibility of future parenthood.

When I started this journey, oncofertility did not exist in Malaysia. There were no services, no pathways, and no clear roadmap to follow. What we had was only a simple question:

Can we save the future fertility of our young cancer patients?

Today, that question has become a reality. Hundreds of patients have been given the opportunity to preserve their hope for parenthood. And every time I see a cancer survivor return years later with the dream of becoming a parent, I am reminded that oncofertility is not simply about freezing tissue or gametes.

It is about preserving hope, dignity, and the possibility of life after cancer.

This journey is far from over. But if there is one principle that continues to guide my work, it is this:

No young patient should ever have to choose between surviving cancer and having the chance to build a family in the future.

UNLOCKING THE GENETIC SECRETS OF THE MALAYSIAN ORANG ASLI

By Dr. Mohamed Afiq Hidayat Zailani

I began my medical journey at Cairo University, Egypt, where I graduated in 2016. With a deep interest in medical research, I pursued my Master鈥檚 and Doctor of Philosophy (Pathology) degrees at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (每日大赛app), completing them in 2021 and 2024, respectively. Today, at 35 years old, I serve as a Senior Lecturer and Molecular Scientist at the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, 每日大赛app.

In medical research, my passion lies at the intersection of molecular genetics and public health, which led me to become the first scientist in Malaysia to conduct dedicated research on the genetic mutations of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, specifically among the Proto-Malay Orang Asli. G6PD is an essential enzyme that protects our cells, particularly the red blood cells, from oxidative damage.

Looking Beyond Laboratory Testing

My fieldwork, which began in December 2021, revealed a remarkably high prevalence of G6PD deficiency within the indigenous community. The condition affects nearly one in seven individuals, or 15.7% of the 258 Proto Malay Orang Asli screened. Using advanced molecular diagnostic tools, including a method called the reverse-dot-blot flow through hybridization (RDB-FTH) and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), my team and I successfully mapped the community’s unique genetic landscape. We have identified at least five distinct G6PD mutations in this remote population.

Patients with G6PD deficiency may face a severe risk of acute haemolytic anemia when exposed to oxidative triggers like antimalarial medications, certain foods such as fava beans, or infections. This poses an especially critical danger, particularly to newborns, who can suffer from severe jaundice and potentially irreversible brain damage if the deficiency is not detected early.

This research project, guided by my esteemed mentor Professor Dr. Raja Zahratul Azma Raja Sabudin and supported by the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) and the Ministry of Higher Education, has been the most meaningful endeavor of my research life. Working closely with these unique populations taught me that research is not just about testing genetics in a laboratory; it is about deeply understanding the human lives behind the data.

Milestones and Global Contributions

My dedication to molecular genetics and health innovation has been recognized through several accolades. I was deeply honored to receive the Young Investigator Award (Bronze Medal) at the Invention, Innovation & Design Exposition (IIDEX) competition, the Best Speaker Award at the International Congress of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (ICPaLM), and the prestigious YSN-ASM Chrysalis Award by the Young Scientists Network, Academy of Science Malaysia.

Beyond my work, I am happy to be actively contributing to the global medical community with my expertise. I serve as a committee member for the Global Globin Network, an international health initiative under UNESCO, and act as an invited reviewer for The Lancet Global Health and an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports, a high-impact international journal. Recently, I compiled my PhD findings into a book titled “Genetics of Orang Asli: Insights Into G6PD Deficiency and Emerging Challenges”, publishing soon under the 每日大赛app Press. I hope my research findings can be effectively communicated to the wider community, as well as to experts and policymakers. Ultimately, my vision is to ensure that remote and indigenous communities are not left behind in accessing modern healthcare.

Embracing New Frontiers

As I look to the future, my research is expanding further into the realm of medical innovation and the broader applications of molecular genetics. Currently, I am exploring the molecular genetics of female infertility, specifically investigating the mitochondrial genome to uncover new insights for affected patients.

Beyond molecular genetics, I am also deeply committed to transforming medical education through digital health technologies. I am currently developing a virtual pathology museum to enhance specimen accessibility for our medical students. In addition, I am honored to lead the faculty鈥檚 module on digital health technologies and to serve as a committee member for the eLearning and Med-AI initiatives at the Faculty of Medicine. I hope the Faculty of Medicine will continue to progress and reach even greater heights in education, research, and innovation.
