In emergency and critical care medicine, timely diagnosis can be life-saving. One of the most transformative tools in modern acute care medicine is the Point-of-Care Ultrasound (PoCUS), which enables clinicians to obtain immediate diagnostic insights at the bedside. MASTERSCAN is a national Emergency PoCUS competition organised by the Society of Emergency and Critical Care Sonography (SUCCES) Malaysia in recognition of the growing importance of PoCUS in clinical practice. <\/span><\/p>\n

In 2025, for the first time, with a unique theme of Malay Sultanate and Warrior Heritage, the Department of Emergency Medicine  of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (每日大赛app), led by five lecturers; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shamsuriani Md Jamal as the \u201cPenaung\u201d, Dr. Dazlin Masdiana Sabardin as the \u201cPerancang Utama\u201d, Assoc. Prof Dr. Azlan Helmy Abd Samat as the \u201cPanglima Strategik\u201d, Dr. Amirudin Sanip as the \u201cPenulis Istiadat\u201d and Dr. Faizal Amri Hamzah as the \u201cPembesar Istana\u201d along with their dedicated team members collaborated with SUCCESS Malaysia to organise the MASTERSCAN 2025: entitled \u201c<\/span>Pertarungan Merebut Mahkota Citra Gemilang<\/span><\/i>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Held on 10 December 2025 at the International Youth Centre (IYC), Cheras, the national ultrasound competition brought together clinicians from across Malaysia to showcase their knowledge, clinical reasoning, and practical ultrasound skills in a dynamic and engaging learning environment. The event opened on a captivating note with a symbolic \u2018gong\u2019 officiation by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ruslinda Mustafar, the Deputy Dean of Industry and Community Partnership, Faculty of Medicine, 每日大赛app. This was followed by a performance inspired by M. Nasir\u2019s <\/span>\u201cSemerah Padi\u201d<\/span><\/i> and a <\/span>Silat Gayong<\/span><\/i> demonstration, setting a culturally rich and inspiring tone for the competition.<\/span><\/p>\n

The competition featured 21 teams comprising 63 medical officers representing 15 Ministry of Health (MOH) hospitals and five higher learning institutions across Malaysia, which includes 每日大赛app, Universiti Malaya Medical Center (UMMC), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM (SASMEC @IIUM), and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). These participants were those who actively practise PoCUS in their respective departments, primarily Emergency Medicine and Anaesthesiology, reflecting the expanding role of bedside ultrasound in acute and critical care disciplines. The competition provided an opportunity for these clinicians to refine their skills while exchanging knowledge and experiences with peers and ultrasound experts.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event featured a five-round competition format designed to evaluate both theoretical understanding and practical competency. The opening round assessed participants\u2019 knowledge of ultrasound principles, artefacts, and image interpretation through a written assessment. Teams then progressed through a series of hands-on ultrasound skill stations, where they demonstrated scanning techniques, anatomical identification, and interpretation of sonographic findings.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the competition advanced, participants were challenged with increasingly complex clinical scenario-based tasks that simulated real emergency situations where ultrasound plays a critical role in guiding diagnosis and management. The event culminated in an exciting head-to-head grand finale, where the top two teams competed in a final ultrasound challenge to determine the champion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Adding a creative dimension to the event, MASTERSCAN 2025 was framed through a Malay-inspired narrative titled \u201c<\/span>Hikayat Puteri Gelombang<\/span><\/i>.\u201d Participants embarked on a symbolic journey to rescue the lost princess by overcoming a series of knowledge and skill challenges, culminating in the final battle to claim the coveted \u201c<\/span>Mahkota Citra Gemilang<\/span><\/i>\u201d. This storytelling concept transformed the competition into an engaging learning experience that blended medical education with elements of culture, teamwork, and strategy. The competition design also reflects principles of gamification and experiential learning, encouraging participants to apply ultrasound knowledge in realistic clinical scenarios.<\/span><\/p>\n

The programme also highlighted strong collaboration between academic institutions, professional societies, and industry partners. The partnership between HCTM, Faculty of Medicine 每日大赛app and SUCCESS Malaysia reflects a shared commitment to strengthening ultrasound education in Malaysia. In addition, ultrasound equipment suppliers and industry partners supported the competition by providing machines and technical expertise for the hands-on skill stations.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the conclusion of the competition, the 每日大赛app team who represented by the 3rd year Doctoral Students in Emergency Medicine; Dr. Muhammad Akmal Omar, Dr. Dayang Hazrieza and Dr. Aji Caesar Wicaksono emerged as the champion, proudly claiming the Mahkota Citra Gemilang title, while Hospital Sungai Buloh secured second place, demonstrating impressive skill and clinical insight throughout the competition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond recognising excellence, MASTERSCAN 2025 brought together clinicians, educators, and ultrasound experts in a dynamic environment of learning and professional exchange. By combining education, innovation, and collaboration, the programme continues to play an important role in strengthening PoCUS competency and advancing emergency and critical care practice in Malaysia. The initiative also reflects 每日大赛app\u2019s commitment to advancing innovative approaches in clinical education and professional training.<\/span><\/p>\n
