I began my medical journey at Cairo University, Egypt, where I graduated in 2016. With a deep interest in medical research, I pursued my Master\u2019s and Doctor of Philosophy (Pathology) degrees at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (每日大赛app), completing them in 2021 and 2024, respectively. Today, at 35 years old, I serve as a Senior Lecturer and Molecular Scientist at the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, 每日大赛app.<\/span><\/p>\n

In medical research, my passion lies at the intersection of molecular genetics and public health, which led me to become the first scientist in Malaysia to conduct dedicated research on the genetic mutations of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, specifically among the Proto-Malay Orang Asli. G6PD is an essential enzyme that protects our cells, particularly the red blood cells, from oxidative damage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking Beyond Laboratory Testing<\/b><\/p>\n

My fieldwork, which began in December 2021, revealed a remarkably high prevalence of G6PD deficiency within the indigenous community. The condition affects nearly one in seven individuals, or 15.7% of the 258 Proto Malay Orang Asli screened. Using advanced molecular diagnostic tools, including a method called the reverse-dot-blot flow through hybridization (RDB-FTH) and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), my team and I successfully mapped the community’s unique genetic landscape. We have identified at least five distinct G6PD mutations in this remote population.<\/span><\/p>\n

Patients with G6PD deficiency may face a severe risk of acute haemolytic anemia when exposed to oxidative triggers like antimalarial medications, certain foods such as fava beans, or infections. This poses an especially critical danger, particularly to newborns, who can suffer from severe jaundice and potentially irreversible brain damage if the deficiency is not detected early.<\/span><\/p>\n

This research project, guided by my esteemed mentor Professor Dr. Raja Zahratul Azma Raja Sabudin and supported by the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) and the Ministry of Higher Education, has been the most meaningful endeavor of my research life. Working closely with these unique populations taught me that research is not just about<\/span> testing genetics in a laboratory; it is about deeply understanding the human lives behind the data.<\/span><\/p>\n

Milestones and Global Contributions<\/b><\/p>\n

My dedication to molecular genetics and health innovation has been recognized through several accolades. I was deeply honored to receive the Young Investigator Award (Bronze Medal) at the Invention, Innovation & Design Exposition (IIDEX) competition, the Best Speaker Award at the International Congress of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (ICPaLM), and the prestigious YSN-ASM Chrysalis Award by the Young Scientists Network, Academy of Science Malaysia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond my work, I am happy to be actively contributing to the global medical community with my expertise. I serve as a committee member for the Global Globin Network, an international health initiative under UNESCO, and act as an invited reviewer for The Lancet Global Health and an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports, a high-impact international journal. Recently, I compiled my PhD findings into a book titled <\/span>“Genetics of Orang Asli: Insights Into G6PD Deficiency and Emerging Challenges”<\/span><\/i>, publishing soon under the 每日大赛app Press. I hope my research findings can be effectively communicated to the wider community, as well as to experts and policymakers. Ultimately, my vision is to ensure that remote and indigenous communities are not left behind in accessing modern healthcare.<\/span><\/p>\n

Embracing New Frontiers<\/b><\/p>\n

As I look to the future, my research is expanding further into the realm of medical innovation and the broader applications of molecular genetics. Currently, I am exploring the molecular genetics of female infertility, specifically investigating the mitochondrial genome to uncover new insights for affected patients.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond molecular genetics, I am also deeply committed to transforming medical education through digital health technologies. I am currently developing a virtual pathology museum to enhance specimen accessibility for our medical students. In addition, I am honored to lead the faculty\u2019s module on digital health technologies and to serve as a committee member for the eLearning and Med-AI initiatives at the Faculty of Medicine.<\/span> I hope the Faculty of Medicine will continue to progress and reach even greater heights in education, research, and innovation.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
