Oculoplastic, Orbit and Lacrimal Surgery (OOLS)

Applicants must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Completion of recognised specialist training in Ophthalmology
  • At least one year of post-specialist qualification experience
  • Ability to perform clinical duties independently with minimal supervision

Fees should be paid to ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp and settled with no outstanding amounts due

At the completion of the fellowship, the fellow should be able to:

  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and surgical skills inÌýoculoplastic, orbital and lacrimal surgery
  • Provide high-quality clinical care while maintaining professional and ethical standards
  • Work effectively within aÌýmultidisciplinary healthcare team
  • Exercise soundÌýclinical judgement, decision-making and emergency management skills
  • Perform oculoplastic surgical procedures safely and competently
  • Demonstrate effectiveÌýcommunication, teamwork and professional responsibility
  • Apply principles ofÌýclinical research and critical appraisal of scientific literature
  • Contribute toÌýteaching and training activitiesÌýwithin the department
  • Conduct supervisedÌýclinical research and scholarly activities
  • Practise with increasingÌýclinical independence while recognising the need for supervision when appropriate

The Oculoplastic Fellow will participate inÌýclinical services, surgical training, academic activities, teaching and research within the Department of Ophthalmology. Training will be conducted under the supervision of consultant oculoplastic surgeons with progressive development of independent clinical and surgical skills.

1. Clinical Responsibilities

The fellow will:

  • Participate as a member of theÌýmultidisciplinary teamÌýmanaging oculoplastic, orbital and lacrimal disorders
  • Assist in theÌýmanagement of ophthalmology inpatients, including clinical assessment, documentation and treatment planning
  • AttendÌýOculoplastic Outpatient Clinics, assessing new and follow-up patients under consultant supervision

Note:
More thanÌý50% of the fellowship training is conducted in the outpatient setting, providing extensive exposure to clinical decision-making in oculoplastic practice.

The fellow will also:

  • Manage patients referred toÌýophthalmic emergency services
  • Assess and manageÌýophthalmic emergencies, particularly oculoplastic and periocular conditions
  • Coordinate referrals from emergency departments and other specialties
  • Maintain clinical competency inÌýgeneral ophthalmology while focusing on the oculoplastic subspecialty
  • EnsureÌýaccurate and comprehensive clinical documentation

2. Surgical Training

The fellow will:

  • AttendÌýoperating theatre sessionsÌýunder consultant supervision
  • Perform surgical procedures withÌýgraded responsibility based on competency and experience
  • Gain exposure to a wide range of procedures including:
  • Eyelid surgery (ptosis repair, entropion, ectropion, eyelid reconstruction)
  • Periocular tumour surgery
  • Lacrimal surgery (e.g., dacryocystorhinostomy)
  • Orbital procedures
  • Management of oculoplastic trauma

The fellow will also:

  • Participate inÌýperioperative patient care, including preoperative assessment and postoperative follow-up

Maintain aÌýsurgical logbook and operative documentation

3. Emergency Duties

The fellow will:

  • Participate inÌýophthalmic emergency services, particularly those related to oculoplastic conditions
  • Assist in theÌýassessment and management of acute ophthalmic presentations
  • Provide appropriateÌýclinical handover to incoming teams

4. Academic Activities

The fellow is expected to actively participate in departmental academic activities including:

  • Clinical meetings and departmental conferences
  • Grand Ward Rounds
  • Ophthalmology teaching sessions and journal clubs
  • Hospital-wide medical and surgical grand rounds
  • Case presentations and clinical audit discussions

5. Teaching Responsibilities

The fellow will contribute to the department’s educational activities by:

  • Teaching and supervisingÌýophthalmology residents, registrars and medical students
  • ProvidingÌýclinical teaching in clinics, wards and operating theatres
  • Participating in theÌýpostgraduate teaching programme

6. Research Activities

The fellow will:

  • Participate inÌýclinical and laboratory-based research activities
  • ConductÌýresearch projects under consultant supervision
  • Contribute toÌýpublications, conference presentations and clinical audits
  • Participate inÌýresearch clinics and multi-centre clinical trials when available
  • Develop skills inÌýcritical appraisal of scientific literature

Certification

Upon successful completion of the programme, aÌýCertificate of Completion of TrainingÌýendorsed by theÌýCourse Director and the Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan MalaysiaÌýwill be awarded.Ìý

Assessment and Monitoring

Fellows’ progress will be monitored throughÌýregular performance evaluations by a designated supervisor, which will assess:

  • Clinical knowledge
  • Clinical judgement and decision-making
  • Emergency and procedural skills
  • Communication and teamwork
  • Professional conduct and responsibility

Credentialing: a process to set the standards and to do an evaluation for a person’s qualification in a field or procedure. It is recognition for the professional training done by a medical practitioner.

Privileges: the rights given by the hospital for a medical practitioner to give treatments or to do procedures on hospital patients based on the qualifications of the training, and the medical practitioner’s experience and expertise.
