FELLOWSHIP IN PAEDIATRIC HAEMATOLOGY AND ONCOLOGY

Recognised postgraduate training in Paediatrics (MRCPCH/ Masters equivalent) with interest in Paediatric Haematology and Oncology.
To produce paediatrician with special interest in paediatric haematology and oncology (less than three years) or subspecialising as paediatric haemato-oncologist (full three years following requirement of the Malaysian Medical Council subspeciality board).
1. To obtain adequate clinical knowledge & skills, appropriate attitudes and communication skills relevant to paediatric oncology practice.
2. To understand and interpret paediatric haematology and pathology laboratory findings.
3. Safe practice to perform procedures pertaining to paediatric oncology; bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy, lumbar puncture. The trainee should be fully competent in basic and advanced life-support.
4. To be familiar with paediatric cancer treatment protocols including chemotherapy and all the relevant management.
5. To understand and use the clinical practice guidelines in paediatric oncology; oncological emergencies, bone marrow transplant, infection control, blood products transfusion, supportive care.
6. To have exposure to palliative care and terminal care of children with cancer.
7. Extensive direct practical exposure with appropriate graded supervision in all aspects of clinical training.
8. To demonstrate professional maturity, good judgement, technical capability and ethical standing.
1. Candidate will be required to perform all clinical activities at the level of a specialist; treat patients in the paediatric haematology and oncology clinic, do ward rounds, perform procedures e.g. bone marrow aspiration and trephine
biopsy, lumbar puncture.
2. Candidate should be able and competent to diagnose and manage common paediatric cancer and haematological/coagulation disorders.
3. Candidate must be confident in interpreting diagnostic results: bone marrow aspiration morphology, immunophenotyping and cytogenetics, trephine biopsy, molecular pathology, histophatological examination, CSF and radio-imaging.
4. Candidate must assist as many procedures as possible and able to perform a few common procedures independently before completed training.
5. Candidate will be required to do posting in haematology pathology lab, radio-oncology and bone marrow transplant ward during the training. ( for three years training)
6. Candidate must attend all CME meetings at the department, multi-disciplinary team, and clinical-radiological discussions.
7. Candidate must keep a logbook and an audit of his/her performance.
8. Candidate must regularly meet with course director for training performance assessment.
9. Candidate is required to do research during the training and encourage to publish at least one manuscript in a WOS journal or present at a national conference. ( for three years training)
10.Candidate must pass the examinations which will be held prior to finishing the programme.
