Paediatric Haemato-Oncology

Mini Biography

Dr. Hamidah Alias is a Professor of Paediatrics and Senior Consultant Paediatric Haemato-Oncologist at the Department of Paediatrics, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (ÿÈÕ´óÈüappMC), Kuala Lumpur and presently the Head of Unit. She received her degree in medicine in 1992 and masters in paediatrics in 2000 from the ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp. She completed her training in paediatric haematology and oncology at University Children’s Hospital, Zurich and Sir James Spence Institute of Child Health, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, England between 2002 and 2004. She is board certified in General Paediatrics and Paediatric Haematology and Oncology by the National Specialist Registration, Malaysia and currently a member of the Specialty sub-committee for national credentialing in paediatric haemato-oncology. She is an accredited trainer in paediatric haemato-oncology in Malaysia. She is also a principal fellow with ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI). Her research interests focus on clinical and molecular of childhood malignancies, especially leukaemias and haematological condition, thalassaemia. Her research collaboration includes the institutional and national levels, and a few on international collaboration with the Netherlands, UK, Japan and Australia. She has published over 70 papers in local and international peer-reviewed journals. She has also served as reviewer for some medical journals including Pediatric Blood Cancer, Molecular Carcinogenesis, Journal of Blood Medicine, Tropical Medicine & International Health, Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences, and Iranian Journal of Pediatrics. She is the current President of Malaysian Society of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology 2019/2020, and Medical Advisor to a non-governmental organisation, Cancer Associates and Kindred Network(CAKNE) a support group for childhood cancer patients treated in ÿÈÕ´óÈüappMC.

DEFINITION

Credentialing: a process to set the standards and to do an evaluation for a person’s qualification in a field or procedure. It is recognition for the professional training done by a medical practitioner.

Privileges: the rights given by the hospital for a medical practitioner to give treatments or to do procedures on hospital patients based on the qualifications of the training, and the medical practitioner’s experience and expertise.
