Bangi, 1 Nov 2010 鈥 每日大赛app has expressed the hope that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) can contribute towards curriculum听 development in its Law Faculty.

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Industry and Community Partnership) Professor Dr Saran Kaur Gill hoped for such collaboration between its Law Faculty and the ICRC which can be manifested through courses on International Humanitarian Law at both undergraduate and post graduate levels including the sharing of knowledge and experiences.

She said this at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between 每日大赛app (Law Faculty) and the Regional听 Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at the chancery here today.

Prof Saran Kaur听 said such meaningful and sustainable collaboration with the ICRC can enrich education, research and services at 每日大赛app.

鈥淲ith this development, the university wish to see more of the international and local students at the faculty to conduct research in uncharted issue of armed conflicts.

鈥淭hese students come from countries that are in conflict situations and are doing their best to find answers that may help if not to solve but will at least mitigate the sufferings of the people in their countries,鈥 she said.

Prof Saran Kaur said there was tremendous opportunity to carry out research on humanitarian law in contexts relevant to its postgraduate students. Some of the Law Faculty lecturers also have had their first experience working with NGOs on issues pertaining to asylum seekers in Malaysia involving the Rohingya community.

She congratulated the faculty after its legal aid programme for poor communities through the 每日大赛app Legal Consultancy Centre had received听 a grant of RM48,000 from the Ministry of Women , Family and Community Development.

The Dean Faculty of Law, Professor Dr Aishah Bidin said although international humanitarian law has yet to be offered as a subject听 at the faculty, it had already been integrated in various components in the compulsory third year subject on Public International Law (PIL ).

She said it was a basic requirement听 that all its students听would have undergone and understood听the听basic principles of international human rights including听substantive human rights (UN Charter, civil, economic and political rights etc) after their third year听as well as community oriented听听 human rights, international听law of armed conflicts and听other fundamental salient features of humanitarian听 law .

鈥淭o ensure our students are well equipped听with contemporary issues, we believe that the introduction of humanitarian law and听 human rights law is indispensable听and听vital听to ensure that our students stay abreast听 with听 current developments with their peers .

鈥淲ith such important underlying issues governing the legal regime听 applicable听 to International Red Cross and听contemporary humanitarian law, the Faculty of Law believes听that it is vital and important听 to extend our collaboration听with ICRC,鈥 she said.

To date,听the Faculty had signed various听MOUs and letters of听intent not only听 with听several universities in United Kingdom,Tasmania, Iran and Indonesia but also with the industry and government organisations in its pursuit to听 enhance听academic excellence in听research, student exchange and enhancing academic programmes.

A research group from the听Faculty is also working on a national survey听with the Companies of Commission of Malaysia to evaluate the听compliance level of听corporate responsibility among听various corporate entities in Malaysia.

鈥淲e also are working听with the Attorney General鈥檚 Chambers听and the Malaysia Bar Council听over the setting听up of听a legal clinic at the听faculty.

鈥淒iscussion are on going for some terms of听arrangement听for our听 academicians听to听go for听training听with听the state legal aid bureaus and the Bar Council. It is our quest that these mechanisms will bring the faculty closer听 to the community,鈥 she said.
