Tasik Chini Biosphere Reserve has been experiencing fast development, especially in mining and plantation. Research has indicated that the size of the lake is shrinking and the dept of the lake is becoming shallower due to high sedimentation. Model simulation indicated that worst-case scenario when is no Tasik Chini, a larger part of downstream towns such as Pekan would be more ht by floods. Tasik Chini acts as the natural buffer zone for floods and acts as a retention pond that holds water during high flows. Therefore, sedimentation and erosion in Tasik Chini have to be mitigated. We have revolutionized a green technique (with support from ECERDC) to control erosion from the river banks of Sungai Chini (Chini River). But the flow of the floods is too strong and a modified bio textile is needed to improve the previous construction.

The feeder drivers such as Sungai Jemberau, Sungai Melai, Sungai Merapoh are fast been affected by development. Rivers and streams are the water resources of a lake. Changes in water quality will have an impact on the population of fish habitat. at PPTC we are carrying out research on fish to understand the population and means to breed using conventional and green technology. Our research is to ensure that lake water quality is adequate for the requirement of the management plan. The rich biodiversity compliments interactive ecotourism involving the community who has been the guidance of the lake for generations. Technology input needs to be researched to recycle materials and reduce the carbon footpath.
