12.2.8 – Minimisation Policies Extended to Suppliers

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp) extends its SDG 12 minimisation policies to suppliers by mandating them to adhere to sustainable practices, including waste reduction, energy efficiency, and responsible sourcing. Suppliers are required to demonstrate compliance through certifications or documented practices through Green Procurement Policy that states the guidelines and instructions to prohibit the use of energy efficient products in ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp. ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp may also conduct regular audits and evaluations of suppliers’ sustainability performance. For instance, suppliers of water filters such as CUCKOO International (MAL) Berhad, Auto Trance Services Sdn. Bhd. A4 white paper and Integrative Technology Sdn. Bhd. for A4 colour paper to ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp adhere to the guidelines by ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp. ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp’s minimisation policies extend to its suppliers and the supply chain, covering:

  1. Maintenance Supplies: For electrical materials, only energy-efficient LED lights are used in campus buildings, contributing to reduced energy consumption.

These policies ensure that ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in every aspect of its operations, from procurement to maintenance (Extension of Goods and Services). ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp need to follows Green Procurement Policy that states the guidelines and instructions to prohibit the use of energy efficient products in ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp as show below.

Green Procurement Policy:

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp) is fully committed to advancing sustainable and responsible procurement practices through the implementation of Government Green Procurement (GGP). As a leading research university and a national champion of sustainability, ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp integrates GGP principles into its governance, operations, and purchasing decisions to reduce environmental impacts, promote resource efficiency, and support the growth of green industries in Malaysia. By prioritising environmentally friendly products and services across all procurement categories, ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp ensures that every purchase contributes to lower carbon emissions, reduced waste generation, and enhanced lifecycle sustainability. This adoption of GGP not only aligns with national policies and the Ministry of Finance’s directives but also reinforces ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp’s dedication to achieving the ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp Sustainable Strategic Plan 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Through a structured GGP governance framework, annual planning, and continuous performance monitoring, ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp demonstrates leadership in embedding green procurement as a core driver of a low-carbon, resource-efficient, and environmentally responsible campus ecosystem.

Use of LEDs lights around campus and ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp’s buildings

For the maintenance of electrical materials, for example building lights, the maintenance workers and supplies only use energy-saving lights, which are LED lights in the buildings in the campus.
ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp has replaced conventional lighting with high-efficiency LEDs in campus streets and building interiors, significantly reducing energy consumption while improving visibility and safety.
The campus has installed inverter technology air conditioners that optimize energy use by adjusting power based on cooling needs, ensuring efficient operation and reducing energy waste.

Five Stars Energy Consumption Fans at Residential

In an effort to lower energy consumption, ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp has converted all fans, particularly in student residences, from AC to DC motor fans. These fans have a 5-star energy rating, consuming between 5-8 kWh, thereby contributing to substantial energy savings.

Energy Efficiency Brand Photocopy 

ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp uses RICOH photocopy in the administration offices. RICOH is one of the brands that implement sustainability in their product (). RICOH products also have the certificate under MyHIJAU ().

MyHIJAU Mark is Malaysia’s official green recognition endorsed by the Government of Malaysia, bringing together certified green products and services that meet local and international environmental standards under one single mark.
  1. Office Supplies: Suppliers of A4 paper to ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp must provide paper certified from sustainable sources, supporting responsible resource management.
(Page: 38) The document outlines specifications for supplying paper products, primarily focusing on environmental and sustainability standards. ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp strictly follow Government green procurement guidelines (GPP) 3.0 on uses of paper.

A paper purchase limitation is designed to regulate and restrict the amount of paper purchased by ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp, aiming to promote sustainability and reduce environmental impact. Implement systems to track paper usage and waste, enabling in ÿÈÕ´óÈüapp to assess the effectiveness of the policy and identify areas for improvement. It helps in minimizing paper waste, encouraging digital alternatives and fostering a culture of environmental awareness.

  • Has MyHIJAU Mark (Product) recognition operated by Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre.
  • Has criteria for recycled content and contaminants
  • Comply with the SIRIM Eco-Label Criteria Product Document (Recycled Paper)
